Foundation

The Three layers of lighting

Every beautifully lit space combines three distinct types of lighting working together. Remove any layer and the room loses depth, function, or character. Master all three and any space transforms.

Ambient Lighting

The foundation layer. Ambient light provides general, even illumination that establishes the room’s overall brightness and emotional tone. It’s the first thing you design — everything else builds on it.

•Cove & indirect linear LED lighting

•Recessed downlights

•Large pendants & chandeliers

•Surface-mount ceiling fixtures

Spec: 150–300 lux · 2700–3000K · Always on a dimmer

Task Lighting

Focused, purposeful light exactly where work happens. Task lighting reduces eye strain, sharpens focus, and ensures activities like cooking, reading, and working are safe and comfortable.

•Under-cabinet kitchen lighting

•Reading lamps & desk lights

•Vanity & mirror lighting

•Island & peninsula pendantsial.

Spec: 500+ lux · 4000–5000K · On independent switches

Accent Lighting

Drama, depth, and dimension. Accent light creates contrast and shadow to reveal texture, highlight artwork and architecture, and give every space its unique character and visual personality.

•Wall grazing & uplighting

•Art & display lighting

•Shelf, joinery & cove lighting

•Toe kick & stair lighting

Spec: 100–200 lux · 2700–3500K · CRI 90+ recommended

technique

Creating Drama with shadow

Great lighting is not about brightness — it’s about contrast. Flat, even light removes all depth. Strategic shadow reveals texture and makes architecture feel intentional.

TECHNOLOGY

Architectural Linear LED Lighting

Linear LED is the most versatile tool in modern lighting design. Unlike point sources, it can be hidden, shaped, and directed to illuminate architecture without interrupting it.

Cove Lighting

LEDs tucked into ceiling coffers produce glare-free, floating ambient light. The gold standard for living rooms and bedrooms. Specify a diffuser profile for even output with no hot spots.

Backlighting

Linear strips behind mirrors, panels, and headboards create a soft halo and the illusion of depth.

Wall Grazing

Position the fixture 2–4″ from a textured surface to pull out maximum shadow depth. The closer the light to the wall, the more pronounced the texture effect. Use narrow-beam profiles.

Stair & Floor Lighting

Linear LEDs along stair risers or recessed in treads create a dramatic floating effect at night and ensure safe navigation. Program to <5% for night mode without disturbing sleep.

Profile Selection

Diffuser vs. Bare Strip

Always use a diffuser cover for ambient and cove applications. Bare strips create hot spots. Diffusers produce the even, professional wash that makes the difference between DIY and designed.

IP Rating

Match to the Environment

Dry areas need IP20. Bathrooms require IP44 minimum. Outdoor or pool use requires IP65+. Water ingress into LED drivers is the #1 failure mode — match the rating to the location.

CRI Standard

Specify CRI 90+

Color Rendering Index measures how accurately a light shows colors vs. natural sunlight. Specify CRI 90+ for all residential spaces. CRI 95+ for vanity, makeup areas, and art collections.

Lighting Every Room Right

Each space in your home has unique lighting requirements. Here’s what we specify for the most important rooms in Central Valley homes.

Recessed downlights or linear slot lighting at 3000K. Spacing typically 4 ft apart for 9-ft ceilings. Avoid 5000K — food looks unappetizing under cool-white.

Task

Under-cabinet linear LEDs positioned toward the front edge of the cabinet illuminate countertops without casting body shadows during food prep. The single most-used light in the home — don’t skip it.

Accent

Inside glass-front cabinets, along toe kicks, and above upper cabinets. Island pendants serve double duty as task and feature lighting.

Ambient

Cove lighting is the gold standard for living rooms — soft, glare-free, and architecturally dramatic. Supplement with a statement chandelier or pendant as a feature light, not the primary source.

Task

Individual floor or table lamps beside seating for reading, on their own circuit. Switchable independently so people can adjust without affecting the room’s atmosphere.

Accent

A cove detail around the perimeter at ceiling level transforms even ordinary rooms. Budget for this first — it delivers more visual impact per dollar than any other single element.

STAIR RISER LIGHTING

Linear LEDs along stair risers create a dramatic floating effect at night and ensure safe navigation. The warm glow along each tread is one of the most impressive features in any home.

NIGHT MODE

Program to <5% brightness for night mode. Motion-activated, so the staircase lights up as you approach and fades after you pass — without disturbing sleep.

PROFILE & IP

Use a recessed aluminum channel with diffuser cover for a clean, flush look. IP44 minimum if stairs are near exterior or wet areas.
